Lagos State University Faculty of Arts to Inaugurate Centre for Afro – Brazilian Studies

LASU FOOTBALL TEAM TO REPRESENT AFRICA AT WORLD STAGE

After conquering Africa at the African Students’ Football Union [ASFU] Soccer Championship, beating a tough opponent, University for Development Studies [UDS], Ghana by a lone goal in the final on Sunday, 27th January, 2019, at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, the LASU Male Football Team is set to represent Africa at the World Stage in Russia, later in the year.

While receiving coach Omosaiye Bamidele Thompson in the company of Coach Idowu Owoyemi and the all conquering team in his office on Monday, 28th January, 2019, at the main campus, Ojo, the Vice Chancellor, Professor ‘Lanre Fagbohun, SAN, promised to support the team when it takes part in the World competition later in the year.

In his Congratulatory message to the team, an elated Professor Fagbohun, SAN, stated “Your victory at the tournament is not for Lagos State only, but, for Nigeria as a whole, I want to assure you that the University Management will give you all necessary support as you will be representing Africa at the World stage in Russia later this year, Congratulations.”

The Vice Chancellor equally noted that “the trophy winning side’s showing had gone a long way to further prove that LASU’s gradual and steady rise to the summit of league of Nigerian Universities is not a fluke, but, a testament of the institutions’ ability to compete and win in every sphere. This shows that what we can do in academics as clearly expressed in our status as Africa Centre of Excellence, we can also do in sports”, he ended.

The week long competition had Eight [8] teams, divided into two groups of Four [4] teams each. LASU emerged top from the Ijebu Ode group with Six [6] points to qualify for the semi finals. In the group stage, LASU beat Kenyatta University, Nairobi, Kenya by 3-2, defeated Edo State University 9-0 and lost 0-2 to Tai Solarin University of Education [TASUED] in the last group match, but, already qualified for the semi-final and shoved aside Ahmadu Bello University [ABU], Zaria 2-1 to reach the final stage of the competition. Lagos State University pipped University of Developmental Services, [UDS], Ghana by a lone goal to grab the sole ticket to represent Africa in Russia.

Aside the trophy and the ticket, LASU won the following awards/prizes during the tournament:

The fair play Award;
Saka Abdul Azeez – 300L School of Mass Communication – Best Goal Keeper of the tournament; and
Oba David Durosinmi – 300L Computer Science, Highest Goal Scorer – Six [6] Goals.

CONGRATULATIONS!

REGULATION, OBSERVATION AND THE NEW DIRECTIVE ON MATERNITY LEAVE FOR FEMALE MEMBERS OF STAFF

The University Authority hereby directs, henceforth, that all female members of staff of the University who intend to proceed on Maternity Leave should obtain approval and commence the leave at least two [2] weeks before the expected date of delivery. This directive became imperative due to this observation:

OBSERVATION
The Staff Welfare Unit while treating Maternity Leave requests from Female Staff members observed the following:

that Female Staff members do not present their medical certificate[s] showing the expected date of delivery at least Two (2) weeks before the date of delivery;

that Female Staff members usually forward medical Certificate from the University Health Centre stating the date of their deliveries.

REGULATIONS GUIDING MATERNITY LEAVE
The Conditions of Service guiding Senior Staff of Lagos State University in Chapter 5, page 88 Section 5.2.8. and 5.2.8.1 provides that:
“Maternity Leave is the authorized absence from duty of a serving female officer granted by the Registrar on account of pregnancy based on the expected date of delivery”.

REGULATIONS
A female officer who is pregnant is entitled to Twenty Four [24] weeks Maternity Leave with full pay in the case of her first Two [2] deliveries. The said leave shall commence at least Two [2] weeks before the expected date of delivery. Any third and subsequent deliveries by any employee shall attract Twelve [12] weeks Maternity leave for the female officer;
A medical certificate showing the expected date of delivery must be presented not less than Two [2] weeks before that date;

The Annual Leave for that year will however be regarded as part of the Maternity leave. Where the Annual Leave has already been enjoyed before the grant of Maternity Leave that part of the maternity leave equivalent to the Annual Leave will be without pay.

LASU CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTRE HOLDS PYTHON AND WEB DEVELOPMENT TRAINING

The Lagos State University [LASU] Career Development Centre will hold a Python and Web Development Training.

LATE PROF. FEMI-PEARSE, AN ICON, QUINTESSENTIAL ADMINISTRATOR, – LASU VC
The 6th Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Lagos State University, Prof. Ayodeji Femi-Pearse, who died on Friday, 28th December, 2018 and was buried on Thursday, 24th at Whispering Palms resort, Iworo, Badagry, Lagos, a nature resort he singlehandedly founded as an entrepreneur.

Earlier on Tuesday, 22nd January, 2019, a commendation service and tributes in his honour was held at Old Great Hall, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba, Lagos. The LASU Community was well represented at the event.

The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University, Professor ‘Lanre Fagbohun, SAN was among those that paid tributes to the renowned distinguished Medical academia.

Professor Fagbohun, SAN, in a low tone started by saying that Prof. Femi-Pearse was an Icon, a Quintesential administrator, a trailblazer, a goal getter who did great to achieve unparallel successes and also rose to the summit of his chosen profession, Medicine.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor, stated brightly “The history of LASU will not be complete without the numerous contributions of Professor Ayodeji Femi-Pearse as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University at a point in time. He was God sent. He led LASU to surmount many challenges. He exhibited unrival commitment to the development of the University. He chaired the Committee that established Lagos State University College of Medicine, one of the foremost Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria”.

On a final note, he applauded the entrepreneurship drive of Late Prof. Femi-Pearse, which he described as an insatiable taste for exploration, this he stated culminated in the establishment of a World Class hospitality and tourist centre, Whispering Palms, Iworo, Badagry, Lagos. “The World, Nigeria, Medicine and his family has lost a rare Gem. LASU will forever, remember you, sir. Good night”, he ended solemnly.

Same day, In the evening, there was another commendation service at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos. The next day, Wednesday, 23rd January, 2019, there was another commendation service at Cathedral of St. Jude, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, while a wake-keep in his honour was held at Christ Anglican Church, Iworo, Baddagry in the evening.

On Thursday, 24th January, 2019, his final journey home commenced with a funeral service at Christ Anglican Church, Iworo, Badagry. The Vice Chancellor, Professor ‘Lanre Fagbohun, SAN, Principal Officers and others were in attendance.

The Late Prof. Femi-Pearse was committed to mother earth at the Whispering Palms in a very private ceremony which had his children and close members of his family in attendance. Immediately after the interment, a celebration reception took place to host guests.

May his soul rest in Peace.

The appointment is for a period of two [2] years, from Monday, December 3rd, 2018 to Wednesday, December 2nd, 2020.

LASUCOM provost commends union

The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) Acting Provost, Prof. Antonia Ogbera has commended the Non Academic Staff Union NASU- LASU, Ikeja for organising a successful Health Talk/2018 End of the year party.

Speaking at the event, the Provost charged the Union to make the programme an annual event.

In his Lecture at the event which has as it theme “Depression, Recognition and Management” the Acting Head of Department, Behavioural Medicine, Dr Rotimi Coker stated that depression is the most common mental illness in Nigeria.

According to him, depression by 2020 will be the top causes of premature death/diability worldwide

He noted that depression can be manifested in various ways which includes depressed mood, loss of energy, loss of intrest in pleasurable things among others

Adding that it can also be caused by nagative or positive life events.

Dr Coker said solutions to depression include, having fun, be financially independent, keep positive attitude,  love your spouse and children unconditionally,  acquire time management skills, worry less, take vacation among others

In his own remark, the NASU- LASU Chairman, Mr Albert Agosu commended the NASU- LASU, Ikeja campus  for honouring their retired members, he then called on the College Management to follow suit.

LASU set to hold interactive discourse with Lagos Gubernatorial candidates

Lagos State University is set to hold the maiden edition of its new governance and policy initiative known as THE LASU GOVERNANCE DISCOURSE. The inaugural edition of the initiative will witness an interactive discourse among the leading gubernatorial candidates in the 2019 Governorship Election in Lagos State.

According to the Leader of Delegation; Coach Owoyemi Idowu, “…Contingents are back safely, all praises to Almighty God for the  journey mercy.”
